How to Select Family Party Games

Get your family moving and plan active, outdoors games for your next family get together. Divide the guests into teams of 2 or 3 and set up obstacle courses or relay games. You can have teams compete to see who can pop the most balloons or run a three-legged race the fastest.

Play musical chairs by setting up a circle of chairs with one less than the number of guests playing. As the music plays, the guests walk around the chairs but when the music stops, everyone must scramble to grab a chair. Whoever is without a chair is out. Remove a chair and play the music again until there is only one chair. The family member seated at the end is the winner!

See how coordinated your family is when you play a game of dropping clothespins into a bucket. The object of the game is to walk a short distance to the bucket with a clothespin between your knees and drop it in. The smaller the bucket, the more difficult the task! Whoever gets the most clothes pins in without dropping any outside the bucket is the champion of this game.

Test your family's vocabulary when you give them a pre-printed sheet of paper with either family names or home towns on it. Contestants then must select words which incorporate some or all of the letters in the word you've provided. The person with the most unique words or phrases wins.

Select a card game such as "Spoons" for your family to play. Sit in a circle surrounding a group of spoons. The number should be one less than the number of people playing. Using 1 or more decks of cards, try to gather 4 of a kind by quickly passing them around the circle one by one. The person with the first set discreetly grabs a spoon, followed by the rest of the players. The person without a spoon is eliminated and the game continues until only 1 spoon remains.

If your family includes small children, make sure you plan games where they can be partnered with an adult. This will make it easier to convey the rules of the game to all players.
