Instructions

  1. Make Basic Macrame Chairs

    • 1

Starting from the left side, bring the end of the cord under the back of the frame.

    • 2

Tie a knot at the front left hand corner of the chair. Leave about 4 inches of cord below the knot.

    • 3

Loosen the cord at the top of the chair to form a loop.

    • 4

Slide the crochet hook into the loop and pull the loop tight, so the crochet hook stays up in the loop.

    • 5

Loop the cord back under the center bar and over the bottom.

    • 6

Loosen another loop at the bottom left front of the chair.

    • 7

Slide another crochet hook into the loop and tighten.

    • 8

Pull the loose cord through the loop that is around the crochet hook.

    • 9

Continue looping the cord around the chair, under the center bar and over the bottom bar, using the crochet hook to pull each loop through the previous loop, until you've covered the whole chair.

    • 10

Weave the end of the cord underneath the frame.

    • 11

To start on the horizontal cord, tie a knot in the front left bar of the chair and pull the cord in a loop across the chair.

    • 12

Bring the loop over the right side bar and bring it up between the two other cords.

    • 13

Put the crochet hook in the loop and pull tight.

    • 14

Repeat the chain stitch action you did with the vertical cord, continuing all across the seat of the chair.

    • 15

Finish off the seat of the chair in the same manner as you did with the back.

    • 16

Cut the cord after the last row, leaving a tail of about 4 inches.

    • 17

Pull out the bottom crochet hook.

    • 18

Pull the cord through the chain stitch with the other crochet hook.

Tips & Warnings

  • You might try using a different color cord for the horizontal weaving than for the vertical to make the chair more aesthetically pleasing.

  • The vertical weaving will use one long cord for the entire process. The horizontal weaving will use another single cord, woven over the seat.
