There is something undeniably charming about a dollhouse. No matter who you are, it's hard to resist the inexorable pull of a replica of domestic life in miniature. Most of us will gaze for hours at a well-furnished dollhouse, ooh-ing and aah-ing over tiny sofas, pint-sized bedspreads and real electric lighting in lamps the size of thimbles. If you are ready to start decorating your own dollhouse, you should know how to build dollhouse furniture.

    Build Your Own Dollhouse Furniture

  1. Step 1

Buy a dollhouse furniture kit. This is the easiest way to start to build dollhouse furniture. You can find dollhouse furniture kits at Jo Ann.com and at Dollhouse Furniture Kits.com (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Assemble the furniture. Dollhouse furniture kits come with pre-cut wooden pieces that fit together to form whatever kind of furniture you are building. Most kits have pieces that fit together via tab and slot, though some kits may require you to glue certain pieces together. Follow the directions that come with the kit to make sure you are assembling the furniture correctly.

  3. Step 3

Apply a coat of paint or wood stain. This is important to give your furniture a finished look. Some furniture kits come with wood stain. If yours does not, you can buy stain or paint at any craft store. You can customize the look of your dollhouse furniture by painting it rather than using stain.

  4. Step 4

Attach the accessories. Depending on what kind of piece you are building, there will probably be small pieces in your furniture kit that must be attached to the finished product (normally with glue). Things like handles for dresser drawers, knobs for wardrobe doors keyholes for trunks and chests are examples of accessories.

  5. Step 5

Put your furniture in its place. Once the furniture is built and the paint, stain or glue has dried, it's time to place it in the dollhouse. You may want to group several like pieces together in one room, or you might decide to give one particular piece a special place all its own to showcase it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always stain or paint dollhouse furniture before attaching any accessories. Do not glue accessories onto dollhouse furniture until the stain or paint has dried.
  • With the numerous small parts, paints and glues needed, the construction of dollhouse furniture is not an activity for young children.
