Model hobbyists will tell you that, aside from building a model, there are few things as special as owning rare kits to showcase. Some of the rarest model kits on the market today can sell for $1,000 or more. That also makes selling kits a terrific way to earn money while enjoying your hobby. It's important, however, to know the right way to sell your rare model kits so that you get the maximum return on your investment.

    Sell Your Rare Model Kits

  1. Step 1

Set up an account with an online auction resource like eBay (see Resources below). This is one of the first places people check to buy rare model kits. It's also where you are most likely to find the biggest audience for your merchandise.

  2. Step 2

Keep your kits in the best possible condition. Do not drop them or stack them; instead, keep the packaging pristine. Many collectors value the packaging almost as much as the contents. There are different condition levels, and the difference in value from one level to the next can sometimes be extreme.

  3. Step 3

Include all of the important information about your kits when you are selling them, and give a complete description in your listing. It's not enough to say "Mint Condition P-38 Lightning." You're better off saying "Mint Condition Revell Monogram Limited Edition P-38 Lightning."

  4. Step 4

Take digital photos of the model and the packaging to include with your listings, whether you list through an auction site or through another online seller. Pictures will help generate interest in your models.

  5. Step 5

Take your models to get appraised by an expert. Professional model makers and collectors will be able to tell you how much you should expect to receive for your models.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider placing your rarest model kits in plastic or shrink wrap if they didn't come already wrapped. This will help ward off moisture, which has a habit of breaking down the box as well as the contents inside.
  • Some of the rare model kits you're looking to sell may actually further increase in value, so be sure you're keeping on top of the trends in the market. Limited edition models are known to continue to increase in value, and those that are long out of print are also known to appreciate very well.
