Step 1
Using the clock face from an analog clock, or a picture of a clock face, explain to the student about hours of the day and that each number represents an hour.

Introduce the concept of the half-hour by using fractions and the second hand on the clock.

Use the numbers and the second hand on the clock to explain five-minute intervals.

Step 4
Demonstrate the two ways to tell time. For example, 2:40 is another way of saying 20 minutes to 3 o'clock.

Discuss the concept of elapsed time using both hands on the clock.

Introduce the digital clock and reintroduce the concepts of hours, half-hours, five-minute intervals, two ways to tell time and elapsed time.

Talk with your child's teacher about what he is learning in school about telling time.

Learn what colors, shapes, animals or characters your child likes to help select a time teaching toy that interests her.

Decide how much you are willing and able to spend on a time teaching toy and stick to that budget.

Involve your child in selecting the time teaching toy.
