The ability to tell time is a significant milestone in a young person's educational development. This process does not have to be difficult or frustrating. The right educational tools and time teaching toys can take the stress out of teaching a child how to tell time. Time teaching toys can also motivate students to learn how to tell time and make the learning process enjoyable and memorable. Follow these tips and guidelines and you will be on your way to teaching your child how to tell time.

    How to Use Time Teaching Toys to Teach Time

  1. Step 1

    Using the clock face from an analog clock, or a picture of a clock face, explain to the student about hours of the day and that each number represents an hour.

  2. Step 2

    Introduce the concept of the half-hour by using fractions and the second hand on the clock.

  3. Step 3

    Use the numbers and the second hand on the clock to explain five-minute intervals.

  4. Step 4

    Demonstrate the two ways to tell time. For example, 2:40 is another way of saying 20 minutes to 3 o'clock.

  5. Step 5

    Discuss the concept of elapsed time using both hands on the clock.

  6. Step 6

    Introduce the digital clock and reintroduce the concepts of hours, half-hours, five-minute intervals, two ways to tell time and elapsed time.
