Soap box derby cars are a lot of fun to build, but if you've never done it before you can easily feel lost. Trial and error is how many racers have learned derby car construction, but that can end up being costly in materials. Whether you sign up for a series of classes throughout the year or for a single seminar at a major soap box derby event, you'll learn tips and tricks to get the job done right the first time.

Register for a Soap Box Derby Construction Clinic

1. Pick the circuit you are going to be racing in when you're ready to register for a construction clinic. Younger racers are only permitted to race in the Stock Division, while those over the age of 11 are permitted to race soap box derby cars in the Super Stock Division.
2. Register for a clinic that actually includes the car and all of the required parts and tools in the final cost. These are obviously the most expensive clinics to attend, but in it you'll learn everything you need to get started right away.
3. Choose a clinic geared towards your experience level. There are clinics for all skill levels, from beginning classes for the uninitiated to master classes for those who have years of experience. Popular designers even offer clinics at major functions, showing off their latest designs while helping others explore the possibilities.
4. Register for a clinic well in advance. There are some classes that, by their very nature, are in higher demand and will fill quicker (as is the case with some master classes). Visit the All American Soap Box Derby Association website to find available clinics in your area (see Resources below).

• Construction clinics are most enjoyable when done as part of a group or with family. Most people that register for construction clinics are parents and children. Sign up with your son or daughter and help them learn to build their car.
• Be aware that children should be supervised while building a soap box derby car. Derbies require the utmost safety and supervision when dealing with or building cars, so always be sure to follow the procedures set forth in the circuit's charter.
