How to Understand the Customs of Morocco

Morocco traces its heritage to 8,000 B.C. Modern Morocco is a blending of the groups that moved into the area over time. Tourists are welcome in this culturally rich, historic kingdom.

1. Avoid arriving in Morocco during the holy month of Ramadan. The Muslims celebrate a month-long fast at this time during which most restaurants and cafes are closed during the daytime. All business is slower paced.

2. Avoid wearing shorts. Morocco is considered to be a moderate Islamic society; however shorts are generally unacceptable both for males and females. Shorts are to be worn at the beach only.

3. Research the price of items before shopping. Negotiation is required when purchasing Moroccan specialty items. Aim for any price deduction you want because some vendors inflate prices enormously.

4. Leave the PDA at home. Public displays of affection are uncommon between same-sex/straight couples. Travelers have been imprisoned for homosexual acts which are illegal.

5. Decide whether to use a guide. Official guides wear badges to prove they are guides. They are expensive. Unofficial guide rates are negotiable. Fix the rate in advance.

6. Practice being polite to the locals. Moroccans greet each other by shaking hands each time they meet. Nothing happens without the people involved being polite to each other. Control your temper when you encounter a problem. If you get angry, you will be unable to solve the problem.

7. Learn the customs of being a guest in Morocco. Wait to enter a home if someone invites you over. Leave your shoes at the door when entering homes of Moroccans who have traditional beliefs. Use your right hand when eating food from a shared dish. The natives consider it rude to use the left hand for right-hand activities. Wait for the dish to be passed to you instead of reaching for foods. Accept food that is offered to you.
