Step 1
Assemble your deck with at least 40 cards. You shouldn't have much more than 40, as you will be less likely to draw your best cards.
-
Step 2
Make sure your deck is about half monster cards and half magic/trap cards. You don't want to be without any monster cards in your hand to play, or you'll have nothing to defend your life points within the game.
-
Step 3
Include monsters with special effects. You'll want monsters that can be upgraded in level, gain bonuses with other cards or can harm your opponent's cards even when destroyed.
-
Step 4
Have a fair amount of cards that will destroy your opponent's spells and traps. This will disable their strategy and force them into a one on one showdown.
-
Step 5
Avoid stocking a lot of very strong monsters. Since you have to tribute other monsters to summon them, you can run out of monsters quickly.
-
Step 6
Know that you cannot have more than three of the same card in your deck. You should also know what cards are forbidden or restricted in official tournaments.
-
Step 1
Let your opponent take the first turn. If he gives away the first move, you can plan your strategy better.
-
Step 2
Play your first monster face down if you go first. Make your opponent wonder what it is and what will happen when it is attacked.
-
Step 3
Have a magic or trap card face down at all times. This will make your opponent wonder what tricks you have.
-
Step 4
Start the game with at least two different strategies involving different monsters and spells. Try to use the first game plan early for a quick win, but have the backup ready if your opponent defeats the first plan.
-
Step 5
Get your opponent into a spot where he has no monsters on the field. You can then attack the life points directly.
