How to Recognize Student Learning Styles

A good teacher realizes that students all learn in different ways. Recognizing the learning styles of your students can help you ensure that all students get the education they deserve. The learning styles that are most common are auditory, visual and tactile.

Things You’ll Need:

• Learning style test

1. Give your students a learning style test. Follow the link in the Who Can Help section below for a free learning style test.
2. Put your students into groups that correspond with the results from their learning style tests.
3. Start discussions with the auditory group. These students learn more from listening and talking about the lesson.
4. Allow the visual team to read and create diagrams or drawings quietly. They learn best from reading information to themselves or by drawing pictures and diagrams.
5. Plan hands-on activities for the tactile group. These students learn the most from experiencing things first-hand and through physical activities.

Tips & Warnings

• Many people think hyperactive students belong in the tactile learning style, but that isn't always the case. Have the student take the learning style test to be sure.
