Different from a traditional vegetable or flower garden, an herb garden is a great addition to any backyard. The trick is to find the right herbs to plant, which isn't hard if you know where to look. Read below for tips on finding the plants you'll need to start your own herb garden.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

Find herbs to propagate in one of four forms: seeds, rooted plants, cuttings or divisions.

  2. Step 2

Buy common and easy to grow herb seeds at the local supermarket or shopping center. Standard varieties of parsley, basil, oregano and dill are located with the vegetable garden seeds.

  3. Step 3

Search online for "herb plant" to find a host of seed companies and nurseries. Request a catalog from any chosen company or order herbs online as seeds or plants.

  4. Step 4

Shop at large stores, such as home centers with garden departments or greenhouses, to find herb plants. The selection of herbs to plant is dependent on the demand in the area and some stores may carry unique varieties.

  5. Step 5

Check the events calendar of the local botanical garden for a plant sale. Many gardens have spring sales where you have a good chance of finding an odd variety like bergamot or chervil.

  6. Step 6

Ask relatives or friends for a cutting of their heirloom herbs or a division of the plant. They will probably be happy to share!

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not take secret cuttings when visiting botanical gardens. The plants are often one of a kind and you don't want to risk damaging or killing the plant.
