Things You'll Need:
- Herbs
-
Step 1
Decide on the focus of the herb garden. You can grow herbs for cooking, making medicines or simply for pleasure. The reason for the garden will help determine the right location.
-
Step 2
Find an area in the yard with an average of 5 hours of sunlight and well-drained soil. Containers will also work for a small herb garden. The amount of sunlight available in the desired location will determine the types of herb plants in the garden design.
-
Step 3
See if the optimal herb garden locations are available for the design: a culinary herb garden near the kitchen door, a medicinal herb garden away from the children's or pet's play areas, a meditation herb garden in a quiet area, or a formal herb garden near a water fountain.
-
Step 4
Design the herb garden as part of the vegetable garden and mingle the plants together as part of a companion planting strategy. Place basil with peppers, dill with broccoli and chives next to the lettuce.
-
Step 5
Locate tall herbs like valerian and comfrey where they have enough room to grow. These look great planted along a fence.
-
Step 6
Design a mint herb garden in a moist area of the yard where the mint will take over quickly. Use a variety of mint flavors such as chocolate, orange, pepper and spearmint.
