Whether you call it a synagogue, "shul" or a temple, the Jewish place of assembly is many things. It is used as a place of prayer, of education, of charitable work and as a social center. Synagogues dot the globe and aren't hard to find if you know where to look.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which type of Jewish congregation you're looking for. There are Orthodox, Conservative, Reformist or Reconstructionist synagogues. Each has their own interpretation of Judaism. If you're not sure which is for you, search online and learn the similarities and differences between them.

  2. Step 2

Look up the nearest synagogue by looking online or scanning through your phone book. The synagogues are usually listed in the "Churches" section of the book. Call the number listed to find the location's address and Sabbath service information.

  3. Step 3

Talk with your neighbors, friends or family. If they are from the area, they may have the inside scoop on the local synagogues.

  4. Step 4

Visit the synagogue and attend services there. It's important to get a feel for the congregation, the rabbi and the type of Judaism they practice. If there is more than one synagogue in your area, check out as many as you feel necessary to find the right synagogue for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • People not of the Jewish faith are welcome to attend services at the synagogue. If you visit an Orthodox congregation, be careful you sit in the correct section-men and women sit separately in the synagogue.
