Developed by Joseph Pilates in a World War I infirmary, today Pilates has come into its own. Pilates studios can be found across the United States. All it takes to start Pilates is a willing body, open mind and the courage to sign up for a class.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about different types of Pilates and what the physical benefits are. Some are performed on a cushioned mat using exercise balls, stretchy bands and other resistance tools. Another type uses Pilates apparatus machines, including springs, straps, pulleys and bars.

  2. Step 2

Choose between taking a Pilates mat class or working on a Pilates apparatus. Often the Pilates apparatus classes are more expensive.

  3. Step 3

Find a Pilates studio in your area. You should also check to see if local gyms offer Pilates classes. Find out when their classes are and ask if you can either observe a class or take a class on a trial basis.

  4. Step 4

Ask about the instructor's background. Look for an instructor who is certified in Pilates and has some experience. If you can, meet with the teacher and discuss any questions, concerns or health problems you may have.

  5. Step 5

Sign up for the class that fits your schedule, budget and physical fitness level.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you attend the class, wear comfortable clothes that you can move and stretch around in. Don't worry about your shoes because Pilates is done barefoot.
  • Before beginning any new exercise regiment, you should consult your physician. This is especially true if you have a pre-existing health condition.
