Quilling is the art of twisting and bending slim strips of paper into shapes which can then be arranged into mosaic-like pieces of art. The tight circle, or "peg," is a foundations piece that is used as the center of flowers, in groups of three or gathered together with other pegs to fill in an area.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Quilling paper
  • Scissors
  • Quick drying glue
  • Toothpick
  • Slotted quilling tool
  • Waxed paper
Step1
Choose a quilling strip and cut to length of 4 inches.
Step2
Place one end of the strip into a slotted quilling tool and slide until only the end is within the slot.
Step3
Twirl the tool, twisting the paper into a tight coil. Keep the paper strip even.
Step4
Dab a dot of glue onto the end of the paper and press firm onto the coil.
Step5
Wait one minute while the glue dries and the quilling shape is secured.
Step6
Gently pull the coil off the slotted tool, without releasing the coil. Use your fingernail underneath the coil to keep the peg flat. Place it on the waxed paper.
Step7
Assemble with other quilled pieces on cards, scrapbook pages or on boxes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may use the slotted tool or a needle tool. Slotted tools are easy to use for beginners. As you get better, you can even paper roll with a toothpick or just your fingers.
  • The tight coil can change its shape by pushing the center out a little, making the coil convex. The convex coil works well as a center of a flower.
  • Many items can be decorated with quilling shapes. Adorn birth announcements, frames, wedding invitations, cards, scrapbooks and boxes with a variety of shapes.
