Paper piecing is using scraps of paper to recreate a line drawing for a scrapbook page. It can be elaborate or simple. It is a wonderful way to add a custom element when there are no scrapbooking supplies available for your needs. Paper piecing patterns are often free online and coloring books provide a variety of characters. Creating custom artwork for your pages will make them unique and personalized.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Scrapbook Papers
  • Chalk
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Adhesive
  • Craft Knife

Step1
Choose a paper piecing pattern. This can be a downloaded pattern, a coloring book page or a line drawing.
Step2
Enlarge or shrink the drawing to the size you need.
Step3
Outline and trim the whole image onto a sheet of black or white paper. This is the base you will glue the rest of the piecings onto.
Step4
Cut out each of the piecings from different colored papers, starting from the largest sections and working towards the smallest. Use a craft knife for the smallest pieces. Utilize both solid and patterned papers.
Step5
Round the corners at the bottom of the tag. Use scissors or a corner rounder.
Step6
Mist the tag lightly with water. Crumple the tag to add texture.
Step7
Adhere each section to the base using quick drying glue. Make sure your smallest pieces attach securely.
Step8
Add detailing by shading with chalk and creating shadows with pens.
Step9
Attach the paper piecing to your scrapbook page.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place your finished piece under a heavy object so it does not warp while the glue dries.
  • Utilize tweezers to place the smallest paper pieces. It allows for precision placement.
  • Use care when cutting small pieces with scissors or a craft knife.
