Matting a photo adds a touch of color and helps to highlight the photos on your scrapbook page. It is a simple procedure yet it adds a custom look to your page. Photos can be matted in a variety of colors or with pattern paper. There are endless ways to use mats on a scrapbook page to add interest, including double and triple matting, matting on an angle and adding accents to the mat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Adhesive
  • Photos
  • Paper cutter
  1. Step 1

Select a photo for matting. Trim it to size, cropping to include the main point of interest.

  2. Step 2

Choose a color of paper for the mat that compliments the photo. If you will be using patterned paper, it helps to use white as a mat first.

  3. Step 3

Adhere the photo to the cardstock using acid-free adhesive, such as a glue stick, adhesive runner or glue dots. Press firmly so the photo does not shift.

  4. Step 4

Using your paper cutter, measure 1/4-inch from one side of the photo, trimming in a straight line. You may also use a wider measurement for even more impact. Just make sure all four sides are even.

  5. Step 5

Trim the next three sides using the same measurement.

  6. Step 6

Add the matted photo to the scrapbook page.

  7. Step 7

Mat a second and third layer, if you like.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut slowly using the paper cutter so it cuts through the paper and cuts straight.
  • Ask your film developer to add a white border on your prints so you won't have to mat each photo.
  • Change the blade in your paper cutter frequently, especially if you cut thicker cardstock.
  • Paper cutters have sharp tips. Use with care.
