How to Make a Journal Jar

A journal jar is a wonderful tool of inspiration. Filled with folded up slips of paper that prompt you to think, they can open your imagination in so many ways. Journal writers, scrapbookers, songwriters and other creative folk find journal jars useful.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Quotes that you like
  • Pens (optional)
  • Colored paper
  • A glass or plastic jar
  • Computer and printer

Step1
Think of the focus of your journal jar. Some topics could be health related, spiritual or creative, or perhaps a mix of several topics.
Step2
Make a list of subtopics for your journal jar based on your main topic. Try to have at least fifteen subtopics.
Step3
Create questions based on your topics of choice. Another idea is using quotes that focus on your topic.
Step4
Type your questions into a Word document to create the paper slips. You could also pre-cut the paper slips and hand write them for making your journal jar.
Step5
Find a jar that you like, preferably one that seals. A quart mason jar is a classic.
Step6
Cut your journal prompts into slips and fold them in half. Place them into the jar. Fill the jar generously.
Step7
Start using your journal jar daily. Create more prompts when you run out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Printing journal jar prompts on colored paper can look pretty. Use several different colors.
  • Consider using some visual prompts. Cut out some photos from magazines and add them to the journal jar.
  • Decorate the journal jar in a way that is fun and attractive.
  • To really stimulate creativity, have a friend make your journal jar and you make theirs. They will come up with prompts you never would, and you'll do the same for them.
