1
Discover which charity or organization would be best to give to in memoriam. Your loved one may have designated a charity in his will or his family may know of a charity close to his heart.
-
2
Do research if your loved one has not left a specific charity in mind. Think of what causes were close to her heart. If she loved children especially, then perhaps a cause that helps children would be an excellent choice.

-
3
Visit the chosen charities online and discover how they would like to accept donations. Learn more about the good works that they do. This will help you make a choice.
-
4
Consider the amount you would like to donate. Simply making a donation in your loved one's honor is touching indeed. The amount you choose is a personal decision.
-
5
Make the donation either online or by sending information through the mail. You can ask the charity to notify the family that the donation was made in honor of this loved one.
-
6
Send the family a card or telephone them and let them know that you made a donation in their loved one's honor. They will be pleased to hear this from you, not simply from the charity.
-
7
Save the receipt from the charity for your tax records to take as a tax deduction. Check with your accountant to confirm this donation is tax deductible.

Tips & Warnings
Select a charity that would appeal to the person you are making the donation in memory of, not simply one that appeals to you or even to the family of the loved one.
It may be best to avoid "hot button" charities and issues such as politics and causes that are considered controversial. Your intention is to do something thoughtful, not to upset the family in any way.
