If you told a child that she was going to Los Angeles on vacation, she would probably have visions of palm trees, movie stars and ocean beaches. If you told the same child that she was moving to Los Angeles her visions would probably be of saying goodbye to friends. To prepare your child for moving to LA, focus on the positive while acknowledging that moving is difficult.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Break the news to your child about moving to Los Angeles as soon as possible. Waiting does not make it easier.

  2. Step 2

Tell your child that you will be able to take trips to Hollywood and Beverly Hills as well as explore the movie studios and homes of the stars.

  3. Step 3

Help him to research Los Angeles. Read about the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. If he likes space, look up the Griffith Observatory.

  4. Step 4

Talk about the ocean, beaches and California weather. Start following the Dodgers and Lakers.

  5. Step 5

Find out what activities your child is dreading leaving and check on their availability in Los Angeles. Chances are whatever your child does now they will be able to do there.

  6. Step 6

Plan a visit to Los Angeles. Show her around the new neighborhood if possible. Let her see that there are real people living there just like her. Make it fun. Build in trips to activities of her choice not just errands for moving.

  7. Step 7

Help him gather addresses of his old friends. Let him know that staying in touch with old friends can help him as he makes new ones.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be positive about the move. If you are not positive do not expect them to be.
  • Plan to get involved in activities and meet neighbors as soon as possible.
  • Plan a trip to the new school. Go when it is in session if you can.
  • Address their concerns. Do not dismiss them.
