Step 1
Have your child help you research New York City. There is no shortage of information on New York City. Read a guidebook or check on the Internet together.
-
Step 2
Talk to him about future trips to the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. If you had family members come through Ellis Island it is a great time to talk about what that move must have been like. It will make his own upcoming move seem much more manageable.
-
Step 3
Tell her about Broadway plays and museums. If she enjoys sports start following the Giants, Jets, Knicks, Nets, Yankees or Mets. Remind her of how much there is to see and do in New York.
-
Step 4
Visit New York City before moving. Take a trip into the Bronx Zoo or a ballgame. Make the trip as much fun as possible.
-
Step 5
Ask him what his biggest concerns are about moving. If he is worried about leaving his sports team or music lessons, find out where he can do it in New York.
-
Step 6
Let her know where in the New York City area you will be going. New York City is so big it can be overwhelming. Try and break it down into smaller pieces.
-
Step 7
Try and visit his new school. If you can go when kids are there he will get a better feel for the school.
