Apple created the first personal computer with its Macintosh. While Windows-operated computers (commonly called PCs) now dominate the market, there are still those who prefer Macs for reasons including their appearance and user-friendly reputation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Operating the Computer

  1. Step 1

Turn on the computer with the button that looks like a circle with a line through the top of it.

  2. Step 2

Place the icons of your programs in the tool bar, located on the side or bottom of the screen. You can easily access the programs from here.

  3. Step 3

Use the "Apple" button in place of the control button in most keyboard commands. It's the button located near the space bar and option button.

  4. Step 4

Know what the three colored buttons in the top left of a window mean. The red closes the window, green expands and contracts it and yellow moves it to the tool bar.

  5. Step 5

Dispose of unwanted files in the trash can icon in the bottom corner. Remove the files permanently with the "Empty Trash" command in the Finder menu.

  6. Step 6

Conserve electricity or the battery when not in use with the "Sleep" command in the Finder menu.

  7. Step 7

Turn off the computer with the "Shut Down" command in the Finder menu.

  8. Hardware and Software

  9. Step 1

Make sure all peripherals and disks you get are Mac-compliant. Remember that most Macs don't come with floppy drives included.

  10. Step 2

Know what type of security systems you need, if any. Many viruses do not affect Macs at all.

  11. Step 3

Choose an Internet browser other than Internet Explorer if you can. Microsoft no longer updates this program for Macs.

  12. Step 4

Install software that can convert PC files to Mac format and vice versa. This can usually be found in the Mac department of a computer store.

  13. Step 5

Know what Apple software is not available on PCs, and know the Windows equivalent. Some programs, such as I-tunes, are on PCs, but there are not many.

Tips & Warnings
  • Know who uses Macs and PCs so you can be compliant. PCs are usually used in technical jobs such as data entry, while Macs have been popular in artistic design projects.
