Before the pollution of cars and industry, there was a world of natural charm and humble living in what has become known as the Southwest. Lovers of this earthy style should use these tips to create a patio reminiscent of the simple and rugged way of life common to the desert dwellers of this region.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Adorn your patio with rustic wood furniture that has a natural, weathered appearance.
Step2
Add a chimenea or wood-burning fire pit for a touch of charm.
Step3
Hang bunches of dried flowers and herbs from your patio's rafters. For even more traditional flavor, hang bunches of dried red chilis.
Step4
Fill extra patio space with lots of Southwestern terracotta pottery filled with blooming varieties of cacti or other traditional desert plants.
Step5
Arrange an old wagon wheel, saddle or cowboy hat with a couple of terracotta pots to add to the ambiance.
Step6
Add Southwestern flair with a perfectly placed cow skull or traditional dream catchers.
Step7
Affix Mexican-inspired clay sconces to the wall and add candles for a beautifully rustic way to light up the night.
Step8
Paint a mural of a pueblo-style adobe house complete with red chilis hanging in the window on your patio's wall or floor.
