1
Cover tables in bold colors like dark blue or red and then place plastic yellow hard hats in the middle for a centerpiece. Cut a small hole in the top of the hats and string helium filled balloons through the hat. Tie the balloons to a weight underneath the hat.

2
Welcome your guests to the party with a line of construction barrels cut from large cardboard boxes and spray painted orange and yellow. Make a simple frame from 1-inch by 4-inch pieces of wood and nail the cardboard barrels to the wood frame for stability.

3
Serve snacks in clean toy dump trucks and use plastic shovels for serving utensils. Drinks can be served from large thermos bottles.

4
Make construction signs to designate specific areas. If you have a sand box, call it the "Digging Zone." Set up a table with building blocks and call it the "Construction Zone." Put the presents in a wheel barrow and call it the "Present Zone." For areas that are off limits to guests, make a "Do Not Enter" sign.

5
Have guests color or decorate a lunch size paper bag as they arrive. Then use the bags to serve their lunch or to hold treats.
-
6
Line a large, clean toy dump truck with cling wrap. Fill it with broken up brownie pieces to look like dirt. One batch of brownies in a large cake pan should be plenty. Serve with a plastic shovel and let the kids enjoy a "dirt cake."

7
Place two chairs together and have the birthday child sit in one chair while opening gifts. Invite the child who brought the gift to join the birthday child in the chair next to them. After the gift is opened let the birthday child give the guest a small tool box filled with party favors. Continue until all the gifts are opened.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't want to make construction barrels, you can purchase plastic orange cones and construction zone tape at most large hardware chains.
Three hours is plenty of time for a kids party. For preschoolers limit the party to two.

Hooray, not a mention of Bob the Builder (no one needs the commercialism)! Here's some other "constructive" ideas to add to that great list of party ideas: >> For the construction "zones" mentioned in the article, buy caution tape (available at some party supply stores) or on eBay. >> You can also "construct" your own party favors. Try making mini soaps or chocolates out of candy molds in the shape of construction hats, which also may be available on eBay. >> Finally, you'll find some fun custom scratchoff games on eBay that look lotto tickets. When you buy, you'll get a handful of lotto style scratchers with your child's name and message imprinted. You'll know in advance how many grand prize winners there are. But you can make everyone a winner if you plan to dole out consolation prizes, which is especially important as the littlest hard hats will otherwise be digging in the dirt.
