How to Prevent a Half Guard Pass

When an opponent is in your half guard, they're in a slightly more dominant position than you. From here, they have leverage to throw strikes, but their main goal is generally to pass into a more dominant position. Preventing them from passing your half guard is a good lesson to learn when Jujitsu training. Follow these steps to find out how.

Things You'll Need:

  • Training Partner
  • MMA Gear
  1. Step 1

    Squeeze your opponent's trapped leg tightly with your legs. Keep your feet locked together to help maintain the pressure.

  2. Step 2

    Control your opponent's upper body with your arms. Holding tightly onto his wrists is usually a good point of control.

  3. Step 3

    Tuck your head closely to his chest under his chin, if he's throwing strikes. This keeps him from having a lot of leverage in his strikes.

  4. Step 4

    Slide your leg that's closest to his free leg, up towards his stomach if your legs create space between your bodies. You can also create space yourself by rotating your hips.

  5. Step 5

    Push your leg and foot all the way through and around his free leg. This will put you back into full guard, which is considered a neutral position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this Jujitsu technique over and over again with your training partner. Jujitsu moves take time, practice and patience to perfect.
