When training jujitsu, learning to pass your opponent's guard or half guard position is one of the first lessons you'll learn. This takes you from a neutral position to a more dominant position. Learning to pass someone's half guard is a fairly simple process, but if it's not done correctly then you'll find yourself getting reversed or back in full guard. Follow these steps to learn how to pass your opponent's half guard.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Training Partner
  • MMA Gear
Step1
Strike your opponent to distract them from your pass attempt. From a half guard position you don't have to worry much about submission attempts by your opponent, but you do have to worry about letting them slide back into a full guard.
Step2
Put your free foot onto the other fighter's thigh.
Step3
Push your foot into their thigh while you try to pull your leg out. This takes away the leverage they have to squeeze your trapped leg.
Step4
Slide your trapped leg free and transition to side control.
Step5
Establish a good base once you're in side control. You don't want to lose the position or get reversed once you have established the dominant position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice this jujitsu technique over and over again with your training partner. Jujitsu moves take time, practice and patience to perfect.
