How to Pass an Opponent's Butterfly Guard

The butterfly guard is a position that allows the fighter on the bottom to manipulate the weight of the fighter on the top. This position leaves the knees on the outside of an opponent's body but has the feet tucked between their legs. Properly learning to pass someone who has you in their butterfly guard is an important aspect when Jujitsu training. Follow these steps to learn how to do it.

Things You'll Need:

  • Training Partner
  • MMA Gear
  1. Step 1

    Throw strikes down on your opponent's face or body. Be extremely careful that you don't let your arms get controlled and that you do not overextend your weight and get reversed.

  2. Step 2

    Dig your elbow into the inner thigh of one of your opponent's legs.

  3. Step 3

    Push that leg to the ground and slide your leg over it.

  4. Step 4

    Rotate your hips and body towards that leg. Many times you'll have to lift over the foot they still have hooked under your leg.

  5. Step 5

    Establish a good base once you're in side control. You don't want to lose the position or get reversed once you have passed the other fighter's butterfly guard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this jujitsu technique over and over again with your training partner. Jujitsu moves take time, practice and patience to perfect.
