How to Pass an Opponent's Guard

The guard is the most basic technique when Jujitsu training. When you're in someone's guard, you can throw solid strikes with fists, forearms or elbows, but you should always try to pass their guard because it puts you in a more dominant position. Passing your opponent's guard is difficult most of the time; but it's an extremely useful skill to perfect. Follow these steps to find out how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Training Partner
  • MMA Gear

Step1
Strike your opponent to keep him off guard. Be careful that he doesn't control your arms because he'll be looking for submissions.
Step2
Push one of his legs down onto the floor.
Step3
Slide your leg over that leg. This has to be done quickly because he'll be trying with all of his might to stop it from happening.
Step4
Pull your other leg free from in between his. Continue striking to distract him from what you're doing. From the half-guard position you're in now, you're in less danger of submissions.
Step5
Establish a good base once your leg is free. You don't want him to immediately get back into a full or half guard position after you just moved into side control.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice this jujitsu technique over and over again with your training partner. Jujitsu moves take time, practice and patience to perfect.
