Escape techniques are extremely important when Jujitsu training. Escapes allow you to get out of a bad situation and transition to better position. Follow these steps to learn how to escape from an "Americana," a basic Jujitsu arm-lock.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • MMA Gear
  • Training Partner
  1. Step 1

Point the tip of your elbow towards your opponent's face. When you're in an "Americana" lock, your opponent will have you in side control. Getting your elbow pointed towards his face will allow you to start the escape.

  2. Step 2

Push your elbow towards his face almost like you're trying to strike him with it.

  3. Step 3

Roll your elbow inside of his bicep. This keeps him from lifting the elbow up and applying pressure from the "Americana" lock.

  4. Step 4

Bring your knee up between your body and your opponent's body.

  5. Step 5

Push away with your free arm and your knee.

  6. Step 6

Slide the leg you were just pushing with all the way through and transition to a guard position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this jujitsu technique over and over again with your training partner. Jujitsu moves take time, practice and patience to perfect.
  • Be careful when practicing an "Americana." You can cause serious damage to your training partner's arm if you apply too much pressure.
