How to Take an Opponent's Back From Side Control

Side control is a dominant position to have when Jujitsu training. From this position, you have leverage to strike your opponent and look for submissions. Once your opponent reacts to the attacks, you also have the opportunity to transition to an even more dominant position. Gaining someone's back from side control would increase your chances of ending a fight quickly. Follow these steps to find out how.

Things You'll Need:

  • Training Partner
  • MMA Gear
  1. Step 1

    Establish a good base. Make sure not to put too much weight high on your opponent's shoulders.

  2. Step 2

    Control the arm that's closest to you. Many fighters like to get this arm between their legs and control it that way.

  3. Step 3

    Strike your opponent with punches, elbows, forearms or knees. This will cause them to react and try to move away from you.

  4. Step 4

    Push the controlled arm across their body. This will move them away from you and cause their body to roll into a belly-down position.

  5. Step 5

    Slide your feet around the back side of their waist and establish hooks between their legs.

  6. Step 6

    Look for submissions or continue striking as you take their back. The rear naked choke is the most popular and effective from an opponent's back.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this jujitsu technique over and over again with your training partner. Jujitsu moves take time, practice and patience to perfect.
