Having the ability to escape from someone applying a kimura lock on you is extremely important when training in jujitsu. A kimura is a shoulder lock that is a very popular technique. The escape to counter a kimura is fairly simple, but it can be difficult to pull off. Read on to learn how to escape a kimura.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mixed Martial Arts Gear
  • Training Partner
  1. Step 1

Swing your legs toward the hand that is not on your trapped arm. This is when your opponent is in top position above your head and already has the kimura locked in.

  2. Step 2

Use the momentum to throw your legs in the opposite direction.

  3. Step 3

Rotate your hips away from the trapped arm. If the other fighter has your right arm in the lock, this would be rotating to your left or counter clockwise.

  4. Step 4

Pull your trapped arm free. After you have rotated your hips, space will be created so that you will have room to maneuver the arm.

  5. Step 5

Transition to a better position. This could be anything from standing up to attempting to put your opponent on their back.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this escape over and over again. It can take some practice to get the movements to flow smoothly. Training jujitsu is all about repetition and patience.
  • Remember that you must perform this escape quickly. A kimura puts an extreme amount of pressure on your arm and shoulder so you will have to tap or risk serious injury if you cannot escape.
  • Be careful when practicing this technique with a training partner. A kimura can cause serious injury if too much pressure is applied.
