How to Be Polite to a Coworker

Unless you are self-employed on a private island, you probably work with a number of other people. Being polite to your coworkers is the best way to promote a positive working environment. Follow these guidelines to be polite to the people working around you.

Instructions

    • 1

Show them kindness. If you see your coworker in need, offer to help them. This could be as simple as picking up a dropped pencil or filing documents for them.

    • 2

Greet your coworker with a kind word. Ask about their day, their family or a recent project.

    • 3

Offer to pick up something for them on your way to the copy room or break room.

    • 4

Be mindful of your body language. If you seem uncomfortable or anxious around them, they will notice.

    • 5

Listen to what your coworker has to say. You may have heard the same story about solving a work problem many times before, but if you listen carefully you might gain new insight.

    • 6

Speak appropriately to your coworker. Use kind words with no foul language or slang.

Tips & Warnings

  • Basically, put your coworkers' needs before your own. This is the essence of being polite.

  • If you have a disagreement about something, try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Confront them with kindness and respect.
