The only thing worse than listening to elevator music is that awkward silence between strangers. Being polite in an elevator can be a challenge when it's hard to know if you should talk about the weather or just hope they get off at the next floor. The main goal in being polite is helping others feel comfortable. Here are a few ideas to make that elevator ride a bit more bearable.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look in the elevator when it first opens. If it seems too crowded, then kindly wait for the next elevator.

  2. Step 2

See who else is waiting for the elevator. If there is someone in more need than you, allow them to enter first. These could be people who are handicapped, carrying large bags or accompanied by small children.

  3. Step 3

Hold the elevator door open, especially if you are the first person to enter the elevator.

  4. Step 4

Ask entering passengers their destination floor and offer to push the button for them.

  5. Step 5

Acknowledge the presence of other people in the elevator. This can be simply handled with a nod or smile. If the elevator is crowded, you do not need to acknowledge every person. But try to acknowledge the ones standing next to you.

  6. Step 6

Be sensitive to the needs of others on the elevator and to the type of people that would be in the building. For example, if you are in a hospital and someone is upset, offer them a clean tissue if you have one. Avoid asking questions though. Kind gestures are enough.

  7. Step 7

Avoid drawing attention to yourself. Try not to do any unnecessary behaviors like digging through your purse, jingling change in your pocket, coughing or talking loudly with another person.

  8. Step 8

Allow others to exit the elevator before you. Hold the door open for them if possible.

Tips & Warnings
  • The basic ideas is to put the needs of others before your own. This is the essence of being polite.
  • Avoid behaviors that involve physical touch such as shaking hands. Most people are not interested in meeting you and they probably don't want to risk spreading germs with strangers.
  • If you must cough or sneeze, do so into a handkerchief or tissue to avoid spreading germs.
