How to Hike Buescher State Park in Texas

Get away from it all with a visit to the Buescher State Park Trail. Located in the Lost Pines area of Texas, Buescher attracts far less traffic than the more popular trails at nearby Bastrop State Park. The trail features scenic dense pine forest and is a nice day hike of about eight miles. Buescher State Park Trail is a great place to hike without fighting the crowds of more popular parks. Things You'll Need:

  • Walking Stick
  • First Aid Kit
  • Hat
  • Camera
  • Snacks and Water
  • Comfortable Hiking Boots
  • Loose, Layered, Seasonal Clothing
  • Small Backpack
  • Insect Repellant
  • Sunscreen
  • Trash Bag
  1. Step 1

    Drive east from Bastrop on Texas State Highway 71 for about 11 miles.

  2. Step 2

    Go north on FM 153 for about 1/2 mile and turn left into the entrance.

  3. Step 3

    Find the trailhead by driving about 3/4 of a mile on Park Road 1E.

  4. Step 4

    Follow the trail until it connects with a pipeline right-of-way.

  5. Step 5

    Continue along the right-of-way for about 1/2 mile, where the trails turns right back into the woods.

  6. Step 6

    Look for the start of the trail loop junction at about 2 miles and go right.

  7. Step 7

    Follow the trail past a small pond and take a right at the next junction, unless you wish to shorten the hike by turning left.

  8. Step 8

    Cross a gravel country road and continue into a ravine filled with tall pines.

  9. Step 9

    Keep right at the next fork where the trail enters a a small wooded valley.

  10. Step 10

    Hike across the main park road and turn right where the loop began, taking you back to the trailhead.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring your own water as none is available on site.
  • In summer, limit hikes to cooler morning times.
  • Only car camping is allowed with a permit.
