How to Hike Monahans Sandhills in Texas

Combine an easy day hike with dune sledding at Monahans Sandhills State Park. Part of a larger dune field that stretches for more than 200 miles, Monahans features several pools of water in the low lying areas between dunes, as well as a forest of miniature oaks. Take along a snowboard or sled to do some sandboarding or dune sledding on the larger dunes. Read on to learn how to hike Monahans Sandhills.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Trash Bags for Carrying Out Waste
  • Hat
  • Light-weight Hiking Shoes or River Sandals
  • Snacks and Water
  • Compass
  • Loose, Layered, Seasonal Clothing
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  1. Step 1

    Drive northeast from Monahans on Interstate 20 for about six miles. Look for the exit to Monahans Sandhills State Park.

  2. Step 2

    Drive into the park on Park Road 41. Turn right into the second picnic area at the concession building to park.

  3. Step 3

    Proceed out from the north side of the parking lot into the dunes for about a mile or so.

  4. Step 4

    Make a counter-clockwise loop and head back to the parking lot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a sled or snowboard to enjoy sliding down the dunes.
  • Bring a compass in case you lose sight of the landmarks.
  • On windy days the sand can be quite irritating to the eyes. Bring protective eye wear.
  • Purify any water taken from Guadalupe Springs.
  • Wear protective sunscreen and a hat to avoid sunburn.
  • Use sound decision-making to reduce risk exposure. Avoid obvious hazards to ensure a safe hike.
