How to Drive Buckhorn Back Country Byway in California

Buckhorn Back Country Byway is located in the desert region of northeastern California. The gravel and dirt road starts in Ravendale, California and follows a 31-mile route east to Duck Flat, Nevada. Along the byway you'll discover wild animals, a distinct desert habitat and beautiful views. Spend 2 hours driving this route or spend some extra time stopping your vehicle to take pictures and explore.

  • Roadside emergency kit
  • Water
  • Camera
  • Reliable vehicle
  1. Step 1

    Call (800) 474-2782 for a free travel brochure before heading out. Start your drive on U.S. Highway 395 in Ravendale, California and drive east.

  2. Step 2

    Admire the wild horses running free in the Twin Peaks Wild Horse and Burro Management Area. Watch for wild burros along the byway.

  3. Step 3

    Enter the Pine Dunes Research Natural Area established to protect a unique variety of Ponderosa pine trees growing in a sand dune.

  4. Step 4

    Watch for wildlife around the wet season lakes bordering the byway. Though not lakes as much as spots where rain collects, Pilgrim Lake, Burnt Lake and Steer Lake are home to many animals during the wet season.

  5. Step 5

    Look in wonder at the panoramic view of Nevada's Great Basin as you continue your drive east on the byway.

  6. Step 6

    Take pictures of the antelope and mule deer roaming across the desert landscape.

  7. Step 7

    End your drive on Nevada State Highway 447 at the edge of Duck Flat, Nevada.

Tips & Warnings
  • Due to the desert climate, make sure you carry extra water and a roadside emergency kit in case of breakdowns.
  • Although the byway is open year round, it temporarily closes during wet weather. For road conditions, call the BLM's Eagle Lake Field Office at (530) 257-5381.
