Things You’ll Need:
Step1
Start your drive in La Canada Flintridge. Drive north and enter the Angeles National Forest.
Step2
Wind around to the east and observe Strawberry Peak on the north side of the byway. Hike one of the trails around and up 6,164-foot Strawberry Peak for lovely views of the area. Call the Angeles Ranger Station at (818) 574-1613 for more information on hiking trails in the forest.
Step3
Continue east on the byway watching for wildlife living in the forest. The area is home to mountain lions, bighorn sheep, bears and more. Bring binoculars to help you search the forest for a glimpse of the animals.
Step4
Stop at the Chilao Recreation Area to have a picnic and rest. Tour the Chilao Visitors Center to learn about the San Gabriel Mountains and pick up maps and brochures of the area.
Step5
Cast a line in Little Rock Creek located east of the Mt. Waterman Ski Area. Splash around in the refreshing waters if you need to cool down.
Step6
Hike part of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail that runs along side the byway. The trail stretches 2,665 miles from Mexico to Canada and is meant for hikers and horseback riders.
Step7
End your trip on the byway through Angeles National Forest at the Grassy Hollow Visitors Center. Learn more about the wildlife living in the forest and pick up a souvenir in the gift shop.
