Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start at Ragged Point where the highway is 400 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Take the walking trail down the cliff to the black sand beach at the bottom. Take a picture of the tallest waterfall located along the highway.

  2. Step 2

Drive north to the Limekiln State Park. Spend a couple hours fishing and hiking while enjoying the views of tall redwoods and waterfalls.

  3. Step 3

Take in the beauty of the pacific coastline as you continue driving northwest along the highway. Stop at the Julia Pfeiffer State Park. Hike to the end of the Overlook trail to spend some time whale watching. Whales pass close to the shoreline in December, January, March and April.

  4. Step 4

Stop in Big Sur for shopping and lunch. Take a guided walking tour of the Point Sur Lighthouse in the Point Sur State Historic Park. Completed in 1889, the lighthouse still aids ships sailing along the California coastline.

  5. Step 5

End your drive on the Big Sur Coast Highway in Carmel. Spend time strolling the streets of the quaint village town only 1 square mile in size.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dress in layers to be comfortable in varying temperatures.
  • The trail down Ragged Point to the beach can be rugged in spots. Don't try to make the journey in sandals.
