Koalas are small mammals that average about 20 pounds in weight. These tree-dwelling mammals appear bearlike, but they are not bears at all but rather marsupials, like kangaroos. These wonderful animals make their home in Australia. Witnessing koalas in the wild is an amazing experience.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camera
  • Water or other liquids
  1. Step 1

Travel to western Australia. Koalas are native to many parts of Australia. They live in societies of other koalas, and their main diet is eucalyptus leaves.

  2. Step 2

Take a guided tour of one of the many parks where koalas live. The Karijini National Park is a prime site to see these wonderful creatures.

  3. Step 3

Keep your distance. Koalas look cute and cuddly, but they do not like people getting too close to them.

  4. Step 4

Enjoy the scenery. Koalas live in some of the world's most beautiful environs. And keep an eye out for other wildlife, including kangaroos.

  5. Step 5

Be careful not only by keeping your distance from the koalas but also by staying alert for snakes. Australia has some of the most venomous snakes in the world.

  6. Step 6

Pack water and food. Koalas live in regions of Australia that can be extremely hot and dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a camera! You will find tons of opportunities for pictures on your vacation.
  • Make sure to stay hydrated and to cool off when needed. You don't want your vacation cut short by dehydration or heatstroke.

on 5/30/2007 Koalas are not native to Western Australia. You can see them in the Caversham Wildlife Park or the Perth Zoo, but for "in-the-wild" sightings, Koalas are native to the East Coast, from South Australia to Queensland.
