How to Obtain a Driver License in Arizona

Arizona driver licenses are valid until the age of 65; however, photo and vision screenings must be updated every 12 years. Out-of-state drivers may not be required to take the written and road tests if they are over 18 years old and show their out-of-state driver licenses when applying for an Arizona license. Step1

Obtain and study an Arizona Driver License Manual which is available at your local Motor Vehicle Division office. Manuals cannot be mailed, but can be downloaded from the Arizona Department of Transportation Web site.

Apply for your license in person at a Motor Vehicle Division office. Locations and hours can be found in the front of the Manual, or call 800-251-5866.

Step3

Bring proper documentation. For the appropriate forms and types of documentation, refer to the Arizona Driver License Manual. Proof of liability insurance is also required if are taking a driving test.

Step4

Submit the required fees with the application. The fee allows you three attempts to pass the test within a 12-month period.

Step5

Pass all the required examinations. There are three tests: a vision screening, a written test and a driving test. You may not be required to take all three tests.

Step6

Meet all the requirements and obtain an Arizona driver license.

Tips & Warnings

Based on your vision screening, you may have a restriction that requires you to wear glasses or contact lenses when driving.
You will have to show you understand the meaning of Arizona traffic signs and understand instructions given in English.
If a road test is required, you will drive a test route which has a variety of traffic situations.
An oral test will be given on request (an appointment may be required).
Information you provide when you apply for a license will be checked against the National Driver Register which provides information about problem drivers. If negative information is found, you will not be issued a license.
