Instructions

    • 1

Tuck your chin. Once you feel the other fighter attempting a triangle choke, immediately tuck your chin. This reduces the pressure on the side of your neck and stops the choke from preventing oxygenated blood to travel to your brain.

    • 2

Shrug your free shoulder. This is another method to alleviate more of the choke's pressure.

    • 3

Grab the other fighter's leg. This will be the leg that is closest to your free arm. You can use both your hands or just the hand on the free arm. Create some space by pulling the leg away from your neck.

    • 4

Roll your free shoulder toward the opponent's head. This begins breaking the leg lock he has over your head and arm.

    • 5

Pull the trapped shoulder and arm out of the lock. This releases both your head and arm from the triangle choke attempt.

    • 6

Move to a more controlled position. Move to side control or stand up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice this escape repeatedly. A training partner will be able to practice the triangle choke while you practice the escape. After several attempts, switch positions.

  • If you cannot break free from the choke, then you will have to tap out or you will get choked unconscious. While there are no long lasting effects from being choked, it is not a pleasant experience.
