Instructions

    • 1

Grab the opponent's arm that is under your chin.

    • 2

Dig in with both your hands and pull down. Do this quickly because the rear naked choke is an extremely dominant position, and you will pass out from the technique. Pulling down on the other fighter's arm will create some space between their arm and your neck.

    • 3

Push your head towards the opponent's arm that is behind your head.

    • 4

Fall backwards causing your opponent's back to fall to the ground with most of his weight on his shoulder.

    • 5

Bring your legs parallel to the ground. This will allow you to get one of his foot hooks out from your legs. This is important as it takes full control of your body away from your opponent.

    • 6

Force your head backwards into the other fighter's arm. This will break the grip he had on his opposite arm and relieve pressure. Always remember to keep pulling down with both your hands on the fighter's arm that is under your chin.

    • 7

Walk your feet out away from your opponent's foot hook. This will push your shoulders towards his chest and bring your feet out and free from the hooks.

    • 8

Maintain control of the other fighter's arm that is under you chin. Check any move the fighter may make to take a mounted position with one of your hands if he attempts it.

    • 9

Explode backwards across your opponent's body and position your weight across his chest. You should end up in his half guard or in side control.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice this escape technique frequently. It takes many reps to master, but is an extremely useful tool once you have it down.

  • A rear naked choke will put you to sleep quickly. Be careful with your training partner and ensure they are careful with you.
