Within a MMA fight, you may find yourself in a precarious position where your opponent has one of your arms trapped and is attempting an armbar. This jujitsu technique is extremely dangerous and difficult to escape. Learning how to escape from an armbar is important if you want to be successful.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Training Partner
  • MMA Gear

Step1
Turn your thumb sideways towards your head. Your opponent will have you in a fully extended arm bar. Turning your thumb towards you head will relieve some of the pressure on your arm and start your escape.
Step2
Walk your feet away from his head. This is done by getting your hips off of the floor and pushing with your feet. This creates space between you and your opponent.
Step3
Bring your free arm under your body after you have walked your feet back as far as you can. This is done by rolling it backwards, which will move your body until your chest is close to the ground.
Step4
Slide your knees up underneath you using the free arm and shoulder for leverage.
Step5
Explode forward on the side of your opponent's body away from your trapped arm. This will pull the arm free and allow you to get to side control on your opponent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice this escape technique frequently. It takes many reps to master, but is an extremely useful tool once you have it mastered.
  • If you feel painful pressure on your arm during training, tap your partner as a signal to relieve the pressure. Armbars can be extremely dangerous and cause serious injury.

on 11/29/2007 This is ok but speed has something to do with it. If I held someone in the arm bar and his feet start to move I move with him.
