How to Perform a Rear Naked Choke

      Take your opponent's back. This will set you in a dominant position and prepare you to execute a rear naked choke.

      Set the choke up properly. This could be done by softening the other fighter up with strikes or feinting a different move.

      Slide one of your arms around your opponent's neck. This should be done with your arm under the opponent's chin.

      Place your opposite hand on the back of the fighter's head and make a fist. Push down after you are firmly in place.

      Grab your bicep firmly. This is with the hand that is wrapped around the other fighter's neck to the opposite arm.

      Squeeze with the arm that is around the opponent's neck while applying pressure to the back of his head with your other hand.

      Breathe in to tighten the choke if the opponent does not tap or pass out quickly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice this technique over and over again. It takes many reps to master, but it is an extremely useful and dangerous weapon once you have it mastered.

  • Do not over exert yourself if the choke is not working. This technique can tire your arms quickly. If the other fighter is not tapping or passing out quickly, then re-adjust the move or try something else.
