Things You'll Need:
- Internet
- Books about the presidents
- Books about American history
-
Step 1
Search government and history websites and books to learn about the best-known aspect of William Henry Harrison--his status as having the shortest term of any president.
-
Step 2
Study his biographies to learn how he defeated Tecumseh in the battle of Tippecanoe, but attempted to discipline Andrew Jackson for invading Florida without permission. Explore his service as a state representative and senator for Ohio, governor of the Indiana Territory, secretary of the Northwest Territory and minister to Colombia. Understand why he cultivated a common image although the idea was originated by an article that was actually attacking him.
-
Step 3
Look for information on how he was born to one of the most influential and wealthiest families in Virginia. Also look at how he was the only president that studied to become a doctor.
-
Step 4
Study important legislation passed during Harrison's presidency such as the Amistad Decision, in which Africans involved in the Amistad rebellion were pardoned. The Supreme Court was forced to rule on the matter.
-
Step 5
Examine other significant events in Harrison's presidency such as Harrison's inauguration speech, the longest inauguration speech of any president. Learn about how he caught pneumonia three weeks later as a result. Also worthy of study is how Harrison's grandson later became president.
