Fireworks are a festive way to celebrate many occasions. The Fourth of July has become synonymous with fireworks, and many people choose to ring in the New Year with these dazzling beauties. Whatever the time of year, though, taking proper safety precautions must be a priority.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remain at a safe distance from live fireworks. Keep an eye on children to ensure they do the same.

  2. Step 2

Follow the instructions on the firework's package exactly as they are given.

  3. Step 3

Keep a water source nearby in the event you must quickly extinguish a firework or fire.

  4. Step 4

Restrain the urge to go inspect a "dud." After waiting several minutes, soak the firework in water, and then discard appropriately.

  5. Step 5

Aim fireworks away from people, buildings, cars or other nearby objects. Allow plenty of space for the firework to explode.

  6. Step 6

Light fireworks individually. Do not twist multiple fuses together to create a larger explosion, or attempt to set off an entire box at once.

  7. Step 7

Use fireworks outside only. Never light fireworks inside, no matter how harmless you think they are. Flying sparks could land on furniture or carpet and ignite a fire.

  8. Step 8

Keep your body and head clear of the firework before lighting it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never ignite a firework in your hand. A fast-burning or short fuse could explode in your hand, or you could fail to throw it far enough, causing injury to yourself or others.
  • Always supervise children who are playing with fireworks. Monitor what they are doing carefully. Never let small children use fireworks.
  • Wear safety glasses when igniting a firework.
  • Soak used fireworks in water before discarding.
  • Do not carry fireworks in your pockets or light them in a can or a glass container.
