If you love working on vehicles, you may find a great hobby or even a career in auto repair. Auto repair can lead to many different opportunities, including becoming a mechanic or body technician or owning an automotive shop.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Automotive school
  • Vehicles
  • Apprenticeship position at an automotive shop

Step1
Find a local automotive shop in the area of your interest and apply for an apprentice position.
Step2
Ask questions to learn from the experienced workers.
Step3
Work hard and do a good job. You can later use this job as a reference.
Step4
Attend a vocational school to get further training and direction.
Step5
Get certified as an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) mechanic.
Step6
Work on your vehicles and the vehicles of family and friends to get experience and referrals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask questions while attending school and working with more experienced people. You can learn a lot by asking questions.
  • Always do your best work. This can go a long way with an employer.
  • Never make assumptions when you are unsure. Ask questions or find out the correct procedure before you misdiagnose or damage a vehicle.
