Cleaning pet urine is always a pain, especially if it's on carpet. The odor can linger around the house for days until you properly clean it. Dogs and cats will continue to urinate in the same spot if the scent is still there. Follow these steps to properly get rid of the smell and break a bad habit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Damp cloth or paper towel
  • Cleaning solution
  • Carpet deodorizer
  • Vacuum
  • Sponge
Step1
Test an area of the carpet with the cleaning solution. Spray a small area and scrub to make sure it doesn't cause discoloration.
Step2
Clean the area first with a damp cloth or paper towel. This will absorb any excess urine and allow the carpet cleaner to penetrate deeply and clean rather than mix with existing urine.
Step3
Spray the carpet cleaner directly onto the urine stain and use a sponge to blot a little. Let the liquid sit for a couple of minutes while it eats away at the urine and odor.
Step4
Blot the area with a sponge until you have removed all the urine. Let the spot dry. This could take a while, depending on how much cleaner you used.
Step5
Spread some deodorizer on the spot after it has dried, then vacuum the area. Spray more carpet cleaner and reclean the spot if you still see a stain. Switch to a stronger cleaner if the spot is still visible after several attempts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear protective gear when you clean the carpet. Plastic gloves will help protect hands from hazardous chemicals. Mouth masks will prevent inhalation of any dangerous chemicals.
  • Never vacuum the carpet when it's wet.
