How to Use a Cheap Spoon Lure
Start your fishing day with a spoon lure. A spoon lure can work as a surface, shallow or deep running lure. It has proven effective for thousands of years. It also proves that realism as interpreted by a fish is far different from our own interpretation. Spoons are cheaper and sturdier than other lures. They are also the most versatile lures.

Acquire a spoon. It doesn't matter whether it is gold or silver in color, although the silver ones don't tarnish so they last much longer. A spoon with an oblong hole at the rear for the eye ring that holds the hook has a better action than those with a round hole. The hook will move back and forth in the hole, enhancing the wiggle action.

Put an eye ring in the front hole if the spoon didn't come with one in the back. Attaching your line directly to the spoon creates more strain on the knot and reduces the wiggle action. Attaching the line or leader to a front eye ring enhances the wiggle and gives you a metal-on-metal click with a slightly different vibration and rhythm than attaching the line to an eye ring and hook at the rear of the spoon.

Use the versatility of the spoon. It casts a long distance, can easily make an erratic action, trolls well, can be shallow or deep running and can be used as a jig. A treble hook is the best all around hook for gulf and bay fishing. If you are in an area that has a lot of tall bottom grass, consider switching to a single hook. If it is really bad, use a weedless single hook.

Examine your spoon closely after extended use. If you haven't lost it to a big fish or snag and have caught 25 or more fish on it, look at the pattern of the teeth marks. You will notice the predominant marks form a curved, concave line a third of the way forward from the rear of the spoon. This is due to game fish striking from the rear. They seem to do this with precision. If you see a lot of marks forward of this line, you are getting a lot of strikes from the side. Consider putting a small treble hook on the front eye ring on the concave side of the lure. You will hook more fish but have more trouble untangling two hooks from your net.
