So many retail window cleaning products boast a streak free shine but rarely deliver. Consider making your own nontoxic window cleaner. You'll know and trust the ingredients and feel safe having it in your cupboards, especially if you have young children in your home. This recipe is great for getting dirt and grime off your window with a streak free shine you can count on.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Large container for mixing, such as a plastic jug
  • Spray bottle
  • Funnel
  • Labels and marker
  • 1 gallon of warm water
  • 1/2 tsp. liquid soap or detergent
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar

Step1
Gather all the necessary ingredients. You may already have most of the items used in this recipe on hand. Those you don't can be picked up at the grocery store.
Step2
Start by adding 1 gallon of warm water to a plastic jug. If recycling an existing jug make sure it is completely clean of its previous contents.
Step3
Incorporate the vinegar and liquid detergent into the water in the jug. The liquid soap helps cut old soap residue on the window. You could also add a splash of lemon juice to lend a pleasant aroma to your cleaning solution.
Step4
Shake the jug to mix the ingredients. Using the funnel, pour the nontoxic window cleaner from the jug to a spray bottle.
Step5
Label the outside of the bottle with a permanent marker. List all the ingredients used and their measurements on the gallon jug so it's easier to refill later. Cover the label with clear tape to protect the ink from bleeding when it gets wet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use old lint free terry clothes to wash your window instead of paper towels and newspaper. The cloth is better at ensuring a streak free shine and also cuts down on waste since you can wash and reuse them. Old hand towels work well.
  • Avoid washing windows on a sunny day as this can contribute to streaks. The sun dries the solution on the window before you can wipe it clean.
  • Even though this is a nontoxic window cleaner you still should keep it out of reach of kids and pets.
