How to Clean a Horse Stall

Cleaning a horse stall is essential to every horse's health and happiness in the barn. A filthy stall can contribute to bad health and performance, and is a cruel way to treat any animal.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pitchfork
  • large bucket or cart
  • Shovel
  • Gloves
  • Boots
  • Bucket or cart
  • Shovel
  • Stall
  • New bedding (straw, shavings, wood pellets)
  • Pitch fork
  1. Step 1

    Remove the horse from the stall.

  2. Step 2

    Bring all materials to the door of the stall.

  3. Step 3

    Place a large bucket or cart within reach of a pitch fork.

  4. Step 4

    Put on work gloves so you don't get blisters on your hands.

  5. Step 5

    Use the pitch fork to pick up all droppings and toss them into the bucket or cart.

  6. Step 6

    Use a shovel to completely remove wet bedding from the stall.

  7. Step 7

    Add fresh bedding to the stall to replace the soiled bedding.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the stall is very dirty, you may have to strip everything out of the stall and replace it all with new bedding.
  • Never clean a stall with the horse still inside. The horse may be spooked by the shovel or pitch fork.
